Everyone who has played videogames between the 80s and present day is familiar with the Platform genre (Mario, Metroid, etc.). There is a relatively new concept has emerged in recent years as independent developers have toyed with the concept of procedural level design. Procedural level design, where game elements are randomly generated by an algorithm, began with an old ASCII game called Rogue, which gained renewed popularity in the early 2000s and coined a new genre—the Roguelike.
Derek Yu, and illustrator/game designer, developed Spelunky a few years ago. The game mechanics are in-depth for a platformer and the levels are procedurally generated. It’s a very unique approach to level design and he’s currently revamping the titled for Xbox.
Tower Climber is a new roguelike platformer by another individual independent developer. I’ve posted the trailer for the beta release—it looks promising.
